Short answer: Traditional MLOps focuses on dataset curation, model training, hyperparameter tuning, and serving structured predictive models (e.g. Scikit-Learn, XGBoost); LLMOps focuses on managing pre-trained foundation models, prompt versioning, agent tool tracing, non-deterministic evaluation (LLM-as-a-Judge), and API cost/token governance.

Detail

While LLMOps inherits fundamental MLOps practices (CI/CD, monitoring, deployment), foundation models shift operational focus from training to composition and quality evaluation:

Operational DimensionTraditional MLOpsLLMOps
Primary ArtifactCustom trained model weights (model.pkl)Prompt templates, RAG pipelines, agent graphs
Data ParadigmFeature stores, tabular labeled dataUnstructured text, vector indexes, prompt schemas
Compute OverheadHigh training compute, low inference computeHigh inference compute (VRAM / token costs)
Evaluation MetricsDeterministic metrics (Accuracy, F1, MSE)Non-deterministic metrics (Faithfulness, LLM-as-a-Judge)
Feedback LoopGround truth label collectionUser thumbs up/down, implicit interaction traces
Traditional MLOps: Data Prep ──► Train Model ──► Evaluate F1 ──► Deploy Artifact
LLMOps: Prompt / RAG ──► Trace Step ──► LLM Eval ──► Guardrails ──► Route API

Example

Comparing operational config structures:

yaml
# Traditional MLOps config (train.yaml)
model_type: xgboost
max_depth: 6
learning_rate: 0.01

# LLMOps pipeline config (app_config.yaml)
llm_provider: openai
model_name: gpt-4o-mini
temperature: 0.2
system_prompt_version: v2.4.1
semantic_cache_ttl_seconds: 86400
fallback_model: llama-3-8b-instruct

Interview tips

  • Highlight prompt versioning tools (e.g. LangSmith, Phoenix, Arize) as equivalent to model registries (MLflow) in traditional MLOps.
  • Discuss governance: managing API vendor rate limits and token spend budgets across environments.
