Short answer: A system prompt is a high-priority instruction string passed at the beginning of an LLM conversation to establish global rules, operational personas, response formats, and behavioral constraints before user turns are processed.

Detail

In Chat Markup Language (ChatML) formats, messages are categorized into roles: system, user, and assistant.

json
[
  {"role": "system", "content": "You are a concise enterprise SQL assistant. Respond only in valid ANSI SQL."},
  {"role": "user", "content": "Get total active users count."}
]

How Models Process System Prompts

  1. Positional Priority: System prompts sit at the start of the sequence, so under causal masking every later user and assistant token can attend back to them, while they cannot attend forward to anything the user writes.
  2. Instruction Following: The priority of the system role is a learned behaviour, not an architectural guarantee. Instruction tuning and RLHF/DPO train the model on examples where system-level instructions win conflicts with later user turns; the role tags themselves are just special tokens, with no mechanism that mechanically boosts their attention weights. This is exactly why prompt injection works at all.
  3. Guardrail Enclosure: System prompts establish output constraints (e.g. "Never mention competitor products", "Return JSON only").

Example

Python concept illustrating system prompt framing:

python
def build_chat_payload(system_instruction: str, user_query: str) -> list[dict]:
    return [
        {"role": "system", "content": system_instruction},
        {"role": "user", "content": user_query}
    ]

payload = build_chat_payload(
    system_instruction="You are a strict Pydantic JSON parser.",
    user_query="Parse: Jane Doe, age 29"
)
print("System Payload Structure:", payload[0])

Interview tips

  • Highlight that while system prompts steer model behavior, they are soft constraints and can still be bypassed by direct prompt injection if not combined with input guardrails.
  • Mention system prompt versioning in production code repositories.
