How do you lead an AI system architecture deep dive under ambiguity?

Short answer: Lead an ambiguous AI architecture interview by systematically defining SLA constraints (QPS, TTFT/TPOT targets, token budget), establishing high-level component diagrams, driving data and model flow trade-offs out loud, and addressing edge case failures (rate limits, drift, hallucinations, security) before the interviewer prompts you.

Detail

In senior AI staff/architect interviews, prompts are intentionally vague (e.g. "Design an enterprise AI assistant for 50,000 employees"). Senior engineers drive the structure rather than waiting for questions.

┌──► 1. Scope & SLA Constraints (QPS, Latency SLAs, Budget)
├──► 2. High-Level System Topology (Gateway, Cache, Vector DB, Serving Engine)
Architecture ─────┼──► 3. Technical Trade-Off Justification (RAG vs Fine-Tuning, vLLM vs API)
Deep Dive ├──► 4. Production Operations (OpenTelemetry, Evals, CI/CD Prompt Suite)
└──► 5. Resilience & Security (Circuit Breakers, PII Redaction, Pre-filtering)

The Senior Leadership Framework

  1. Clarify Constraints Proactively: Calculate quantitative bounds (e.g., "At 100 QPS with 2K context prompts, our KV cache VRAM requirement will be ~40GB").
  2. Justify Technical Decisions: Explain why alternative approaches were rejected (e.g. "We chose hybrid RAG over fine-tuning because internal policy documents update daily").
  3. Address Failure Modes & Cost Control: Detail circuit breaker loop limits, semantic caching, rate limiting, and fallback LLM provider routing.

Example

Whiteboard architecture blueprint structure to present:

markdown
1. API Gateway Layer: Rate Limiting (Token Bucket), PII Masking, Router.
2. Caching Layer: Redis Semantic Cache (Threshold 0.92 cosine similarity).
3. Retrieval Layer: Hybrid Search (Qdrant HNSW + BM25) + Cohere Reranker.
4. Model Execution: vLLM Cluster with PagedAttention + Continuous Batching.
5. Safety & Quality: Llama Guard Output Classifier + LangSmith Tracing Spans.

Interview tips

  • Own the whiteboard/conversation: drive the narrative smoothly from high-level data flow down to low-level GPU VRAM calculations.
  • Always tie technical choices back to business outcomes (user latency SLA, API cost budget, data privacy compliance).
